Day 4: 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Characters Introduced:

  • Mitch Anderson (Ned Vaughn): The man Marwan enlists to fly the stealth bomber and blow up Air Force One. You need to be a special kind of merc to take on that job.

Returning Characters:

Not here

Key Moments:

  • Paul scoffs at the McLennen-Forster thugs’ attempts at torture; he’s already been at the hands of the master. Jack takes out one of them but the other uses Paul as a hostage. Paul pulls the head turn move so Jack can shoot the guy in the face. Paul takes Jack to the evidence and Jack praises him for holding out.
  • Tony tells CTU that Michelle will be taking over. Michelle can’t even look Tony in the eye as she takes his access then gives him some menial task to get him out of the way.
  • Jack spots the McLennen-Forster helicopter flying towards their position. Back at CTU, Tony recognizes the chopper as a kill squad. The soldiers hit the ground looking to find the evidence and remove Jack and Paul.
  • Jack and Paul limp towards a gun store. They are greeted by a shotgun blast so Jack just bursts through the door and disarms the guy. He identifies himself then looks to gear up. He tells Paul that they need to engage McLennen-Forster in a firefight so CTU can find them. The shop owner brothers offer their help.
  • She may treat Tony like shit but Michelle makes up for it by firing Sarah when she whines about what Driscoll promised her.
  • Curtis tells Michelle that they don’t have enough resources to split up Sarah’s work. He tells her to reevaluate her opinion of Tony. She calls him over and Tony immediately reads Jack’s mind and says he will cause a firefight. Michelle doesn’t listen and tells Curtis to spread the CTU units all around the perimeter.
  • Jack shoots wide at the first soldier he spots, alerting him of their location.
  • Audrey reiterates what Curtis says and tells Michelle to give Tony a chance because he is awesome. Michelle tries to make amends but the tension is still there.
  • Edgar locates Jack’s location by tracking the communications of the soldiers. Curtis bigups Tony and Michelle appropriately hangs her head in shame.
  • The shootout at the gun store begins.
  • Curtis tells Audrey that CTU agents will arrive in 5 minutes.
  • Proving that Jack is best good guy ever, he knifes the lead soldier in the back of the neck. Castle and the CTU agents move in to secure the area.
  • Tony relays the update from Castle to Michelle then asks to leave due to the awkwardness. Michelle pulls a Jack and tells Tony that he is needed.
  • The McLennen-Forster suit is down but not dead. Paul spots him pull a gun and pushes Jack out of the way. Paul takes the bullet in the gut.
  • Anderson tells Marwan that he is in position. Marwan makes cryptic statements about the President.

Ridiculousness:

  • The gun storeowners are Muslims just so 24 can cover their ass. This paranoia over public opinion will show up again and again over the remaining seasons.
  • I thought Heller and Tony were Jack’s boys. Both of them do Jack no favors by telling Audrey that the Jack she is seeing today is the real Jack. She needs to deal with that fact.
  • Paul getting shot was such a television cliché. Although the store is swarming with CTU agents and Jack has already given the evidence to CTU, the McLennen-Forster suit still thinks killing Jack will accomplish something.

Running Totals:

Torture doesn’t mean you can’t be creative: 1 (24)

  • The McLennen-Forster thugs may not be Jack Bauer but they did slam Paul’s hand in a file cabinet.

Jack’s body count: 7 (84)

  • Jack takes care of the guards hurting his new best friend Paul.
  • Jack racks up a decent number defending the store.

  1. I presume the PSA they started airing halfway thru this season along the lines of Not All Muslims Are Evil, Just The Ones So Far This Season are not included on the DVD. Though the insertion of random not-evil Muslim characters doesn't read as forced as it seemed at the time.

  2. The brothers weren't that offensive, but it was more about the first response that I remember 24 being obvious about. I just posted the lawyer stopping the torture episode which soon followed this hour. It's just hilarious to me how 24 wanted it both ways. We want to routinely do awful stuff but please don't hate us.
