Day 7: 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM

Characters Introduced:

  • Michael Latham (John Billingsley): 2 years in a row with the Star Trek alumni. He is just an engineer who gets kidnapped and tortured until he is killed.
  • Blaine Mayer (Kurtwood Smith): A Senator who has a huge bug up his ass about Jack Bauer’s tactics. In the usual 24 fashion, anyone opposed to Jack’s methods comes off like a douchebag.
  • Renee Walker (Annie Wersching): I’m shuddering already. She is not the worst character introduced but she is given the role of questioning everything Jack does throughout the day. It becomes extremely tiresome.
  • Janis Gold (Janeane Garofalo): This had to be on the nose casting. They needed a character that would whine at any mention of CTU tactics so they cast at noted liberal for the role. Somehow pulls most of it off without causing pure hatred.
  • Larry Moss (Jeffrey Nordling): The head of FBI and some sort of miracle performance because he is viciously anti-Jack put doesn’t become another Erin Driscoll.
  • Sean Hillinger (Rhys Coiro): FBI analyst that is pretty damn useless even when he is the mole.
  • Masters (Nick Chinlund): The first thug working with Tony that gets to speak.
  • Joe Stevens (Mark Dewin): The Secretary of State who does not agree with Taylor’s policies towards Sangala.
  • Tim Woods (Frank John Hughes): Takes over for Karen Hayes as the head of Homeland Security. He is never really given his own storyline so he comes off as competent. How novel.
  • Brian Gedge (Warren Kole): I’m not comfortable with how easy it is to find corrupt Secret Service agents.
  • Gabriel Schector (Tommy Flanagan): Yeah for that guy from Braveheart and Gladiator.
  • Alan Tanner (Dameon Clarke): Tony’s sniper and another member of the crew.

Returning Characters:

  • Jack Bauer (24: Redemption)
  • Tony Almeida (8pm – 9pm episode of season 5)
  • Allison Taylor (24: Redemption)
  • Ethan Kanin (24: Redemption)
  • Henry Taylor (24: Redemption)

Key Moments:

  • All new location, this time we are in DC.
  • Latham is driving his daughter to school when he is rammed multiple times at an intersection. Masked men hop out of a van, fire their guns in the air, and then grab Latham. One of these masked men has a very familiar voice.
  • Mayer is introduced pontificating on the evils of CTU. The camera swings around and we see that Jack Bauer is the witness being questioned. Jack refuses consul and tells Mayer to ask his questions with complete disdain. Bring on the first debate on the pros and cons of torture. Mayer acts high and mighty, while Jack responds that he will torture any motherfucker that puts American lives in danger. Renee walks right through the middle of the Senate proceedings (which can’t be proper) to remand Jack into FBI custody. Mayer tells Jack he will return tomorrow morning. Renee leads Jack out and says they are heading to FBI headquarters.
  • Larry is briefing his FBI agents and they talk about the Latham kidnapping. Latham built some sort of firewall device that would allow access to everything everywhere.
  • A bloody and beaten Latham tells Masters that he is done with the circuit board.
  • Jack enters the FBI and immediately is given shit by Larry. Jack just wants to get this over with. Larry warns Renee not to set-off Jack … is Jack some sort of government boogeyman told to children to keep them in line? Renee tells Jack that there is a national security matter and they need his help. She tells him about the firewall device but Jack doesn’t understand where he comes in. Renee then shows him a current image of Tony Almeida. No explanation is given to how he is alive. Jack denies that this can be possible. He gets up and leaves but Renee stops him by saying she exhumed(!) Tony’s grave and he wasn’t in the box.
  • We see Tony in the flesh as he asks Masters if they are in the system yet.
  • The module is not working correctly, so Tony brings it back to Latham and tells him to fix it using the standard threats.
  • President Taylor and Ethan talk about Juma and Sangala. Henry walks in to say that some reporter is about to go forward with an attack piece on Taylor. He tells her that he can talk to the reporter. Ethan says the Joint Chiefs are ready. Ethan and Taylor walk and talk about Henry and Roger Taylor’s death by suicide. Taylor begins her meeting with the Joint Chiefs.
  • Latham says he is finished for a second time and Tony takes the circuit to Masters. When he turns it on, the air traffic tower notices a glitch in the radar.
  • Jack and Renee continue to talk Tony but Jack won’t accept that he has turned. She asks him to help her track Tony down then Jack can ask him. Jack is left with all the FBI’s data on Tony’s actions.
  • Larry tells Renee that there has been an intrusion in the kernel of air traffic control.
  • Sean whines when Renee asks him to help Jack search through Tony’s data.
  • Taylor and Stevens argue over an American attack on Juma. Ethan interrupts to tell Taylor that Tim needs to speak with her. He tells her about the kernel attack. She thinks it is Juma but he says this attack is homegrown.
  • Henry shows his skill as he gets the reporter to back off his story on Allison. His Secret Service agent, Gedge, pops in to tell him that Henry has a call. A private investigator tells him that Samantha received a lump sum payment around the time of Roger’s death. Henry says he will speak with her. He tells Gedge his plans and they talk about how Henry does not believe his son committed suicide.
  • Jack has found a lead on Tony. They have an old contact in DC named Gabriel Schector. Larry tells Renee to pick him up but Jack says Gabriel will just stall and they won’t get the information they need. Larry rips Jack for his tactics and even insults him when Jack gets up. Jack should just kill everyone in the office on general principle. Renee finds a middle ground and says she wants to take Jack with her to scare Gabriel.
  • Renee and Jack are on the road to Gabriel’s place. He explains who Gabriel is but still refuses to go with the Tony is evil theory. They arrive and head in alone.
  • Renee gives Jack one last threat about his tactics before knocking on the door. Gabriel opens the door and spots Jack, who just smiles at him. Gabriel loves to talk but tells them nothing. When Renee pushes on Tony, Gabriel kicks them out. Renee beats the shit out of Gabriel’s thug when he grabs her arm. Jack picks up the discarded gun and points it a Gabriel. Jack moves in close but stops and turns to Renee and asks her what she wants him to do. She gives him the go ahead and he grabs a pen and gets into stabbing position. Gabriel cracks and is greeted by a sniper bullet. Jack spots the sniper running on the roof of another building. Gabriel’s phone rings and Tony warns Jack to stay away.
  • Air traffic loses contact with a plane that we have been following all hour.
  • Tony is playing the role of air traffic control.

Ridiculousness:

  • The torture debate will not go away the entire day. It will literally still be discussed in the final hour of the day. Way to show your paranoia by constantly trying to prove your point over and over.

Running Totals:

No cliches in the first hour!

2 comments:

  1. This season is "Training Day" with Jack in the lead, except he fails to do the big Denzel speech at the end of that movie.
