Day 2: 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM

Characters Introduced:

  • Megan Matheson (Skye McCole Bartusiak): A really bad set of parents for some reason hired Kim Bauer to be a full-time nanny for this little girl.
  • Gary Matheson (Billy Burke): Megan’s psychotic dad who may or may not be the reigning father of the year.
  • Jenny Dodge (Tamlyn Tomita): Palmer’s press secretary who will pop in and out throughout the year to have orders barked at her.
  • Paula Schaeffer (Sara Gilbert): CTU’s new Jamey who will not have as long of a run as her time as Darlene.
  • Michelle Dessler (Reiko Aylesworth): She has taken over the Tony Almedia role now that Tony has the Nina role at CTU. She even inherits Tony’s ability to stare intently whenever the mood is right.
  • Eric Rayburn (Timothy Carhart): The man running NSA operations in the presidential bunker. His only purpose is to disagree with Palmer and look shady.
  • Lynne Kresge (Michelle Forbes): Palmer’s main advisor who constantly looks stern and argues with all the same people that Palmer does.
  • Carla Matheson (Tracy Middendorf): Megan’s mother who exists mainly to receive Gary’s abuse.
  • Reza Naiyeer (Phillip Rhys): The first of many attempts by 24 to introduce a character, make you think they can’t be trusted, then turn your preconceptions around you. Problem here is that Reza is a douche.
  • Marie Warner (Laura Harris): Crazy skinny and just plain crazy Warner sister who is supposed to marry Reza today. She has other more significant plans.
  • Kate Warner (Sarah Wynter): The other less trusting Warner sister who instead of planning Marie’s wedding will have a much more stressful day.
  • Bob Warner (John Terry): Father of Kate and Marie and a man with the inability to answer simple questions that will have saved people a lot of time and effort. He is also Christian Shepard and the first of a cavalcade of significant Lost actors to appear this season.

Returning Characters:

  • David Palmer (Final episode of season 1)
  • Kim Bauer (Final episode of season 1)
  • Tony Almeida (Final episode of season 1)
  • George Mason (Final episode of season 1)
  • Jack Bauer (Final episode of season 1)

Key Moments:

  • The NSA wants CTU to bring the inactive Jack Bauer back in to deal with the threat that interrupts President Palmer’s day off. And to be more specific, an “inactive” Jack Bauer means wearing a flannel jacket and rocking a sweet beard.
  • The threat is revealed to be a nuclear bomb on American soil that will be detonated somewhere in LA today. The terrorist group responsible is named Second Wave.
  • Jack spends his time not working by spying on Kim. He needs to spy on her because Kim cannot be around her father without thinking of her dead mother.
  • Rayburn wants Palmer to meet with the Joint Chiefs of Staff in order to get the retaliation plans in motion. David believes this is premature and the bomb is what is important. This will be the most important continuing storyline that Palmer will be dealing with all day.
  • Marie is set to marry Reza today even though Kate still does not trust Reza.
  • No one at CTU has the power to get Jack to even answer the phone, but when the call is made by David Palmer Jack agrees to at least go to CTU and hear about what is going on.
  • Jack arrives at CTU and is told about the nuclear bomb in LA. He immediately walks out and calls Kim and sounds like a lunatic telling her to leave LA with him. He gets all the way to his truck until he sees children and realizes he needs to man the fuck up and save the day. He returns and informs Mason that he wants Tony to handle getting Kim out of LA. Mason tells Jack that he needs to go back undercover to find a man he put in jail, Joseph Wald. Jack has Mason bring in the witness threatening to put Wald back in prison.
  • Kate hired a private investigator to look into Reza and the PI calls to tell her that he has had dealings with a terrorist named Syed Ali.
  • When the child pornographer and murderer that is the witness against Wald is brought into CTU, Jack just shoots him then asks for a hacksaw.
  • Gary comes back home from work to beat the shit out of his wife. Kim and Megan cower in terror until Gary comes into Megan’s room. Kim tries to protect Megan but Gary threatens the hell out of her and yanks Megan to the ground causing her to hit her head on the way down.
  • The first hour of the day ends with Jack shaving the beard and cutting his hair because he needs to be business appropriate in order to go undercover with a bunch government hating American terrorists.

Ridiculousness:

  • In the last time 24 would go with this, the initial scene of the season is information being found in a foreign country. This time it is Seoul through the use of some sort of crazy ass torture machine.
  • Kim Bauer is reintroduced with her greatest strength, in her panties brushing her teeth. Gary recognizes this by staring at her multiple times then complimenting her on her body over breakfast. Classy dude.
  • In one of the more aggravating tics on 24, they are always happy to name Russia or China as the villains but the minute they want a country associated with Islam as the bad guys the name is suspiciously never said out loud or in later seasons fake. Every single conversation for the entire year will mysteriously never name the countries in question.
  • In one of the more on the nose edits, when Palmer says there is a man in LA with a nuclear bomb instead of showing David they switch to the introduction of Reza. So should I trust him or not?
  • Look I don’t have the ability to count high enough for this, but we are introduced to the Michelle and Tony CTU stare that will reoccur every single week until the end of time. Many characters will inherit this trait but it is these 2 who have the most longing in their hearts.

Running Totals:

Cubs Mug: 1 (3)

  • Just to make sure we don’t forget, Tony drinks from it in his first scene of the season.

The Healing Power of Jack Tears: 1 (5)

  • You don’t see any actual tears, but Jack does have visible wet eyes while lying on the couch clutching the photo of his dead wife and estranged daughter. I’m calling it.

Jack the Butcher: 1 (2)

  • Jack removes a man’s head with a hacksaw.

Jack’s Body Count: 1 (15)

  • Cold blooded murder counts but removing the head does not give Jack an extra point.

1 comment:

  1. The future season arguments about too much torture seem kind of dumb when you remember Jack shot a got and cut off his head just for a lead. You knew what you were dealing with here.
